Dear Friends, Given that farming today has been taken away from the hands of Indian farmers. While newer ideas are put forth such as Green Revolution in Eastern India or Second Green Revolution, these are in reality attempts to create markets for corporations and do not have any real solutions for farmers, the *Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture(ASHA) *is organizing a Kisan Swaraj Yatra beginning on 2nd October, Gandhi Jayanti from Sabarmati Ashram,Gujarat and concluding at Rajghat,New Delhi on the 11th December,2010.
The purpose of the Yatra is to ensure a greater awareness amongst Indian citizens about the urgent need to adopt sustainable agricultural practices given the systemic and recurrent problems farmers are having with pesticides based monocultures. Such an attempt aquires further importance given the context of the Cabinet pushing for the controversial Seeds Bill and National Biotech Regulatory Authority of India (NBRAI) Bill-which will effectively make it easy for corporations manufacturing Genetically Modified seeds to capture the Indian seeds market, thereby irreversibly damaging our foodchain for generations to come. In order to strengthen mobilization efforts to make the Swaraj Yatra a success, especially in its final phase of conclusion in Delhi, we need to all come together and deliberate on how to together make this possible. You are all therefore invited for a meeting for sharing ideas and strategizing for the Yatra on September 10,2010 at Indian Social Action forum Office(INSAF),A-124/6,Katwaria Sarai from 5 pm.
