CITIZENS' INITIATIVE FOR PEACE
Press Statement

September 18, 2010

CIP calls upon citizens to remain extra vigilant

The Citizens’ Initiative for Peace (CIP), Mumbai – a coalition of a number
of local NGOs, voluntary organisations and concerned individuals – expresses
its serious concern at the gradual building up of tensions over the
impending judgement by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on the
coming September 24th as regards the Babri Masjid / Ram Janambhoomi dispute
– the six decades old concerned title suit, to be more specific.

In this connection it urges the state government of Maharashtra to take all
necessary preemptive measures to ensure that there is no breach of peace in
the wake of the delivery of the judgement.

It also urges the disputing parties not to violently respond to any adverse
verdict nor provocatively celebrate a favourable one. One is of course free
to take due legal recourse in case one is not satisfied with the judgement.
But it would be highly unfortunate if one tries to disturb social peace by
using the court verdict as a too convenient peg.

Finally, the CIP calls upon the common citizenry to remain extra vigilant
and refuse to be provoked by sinister forces if they try to trigger hatred
and violence and thereby cause damage to life, property, social tranquility
and our customary way of life. It is time to recall that eternal vigilance
is the price of liberty and act accordingly.

Signed,

(Avinash Kadam) (Jatin Desai) (Madhav Menon) (Salil Ramchandra)

(Sarita Ramamoorthy) (Shahzad Rasheed) (Soheb Lokhandwala) &

(Sukla Sen)
