*Background*:
Thoothukudi, tomorrow, will witness a rally of the kind that has not been
seen in the town since the 1997 when the protest against Sterlite's copper
smelter was at its height. For nearly a decade, voices of resistance had
subsided due to the enormous purchasing power of the corporation combined
with the collusive involvement of the District Administration and the
police. Numerous NGOs, politicians, academic institutions had been lured by
the management to support the company. Simultaneously, the company's
unchecked pollution has laid waste entire aquifers and caused a massive air
pollution problem. The skeletons are now coming tumbling out of the closet.
Farmers, fisherfolk, residents from the fenceline villages around Sterlite,
and people from various sections of society in Thoothukudi (merchants,
traders etc) are joining to call for a shut down of Sterlite's operations in
Thoothukudi.
