FREE BRAHMAPUTRA FROM THE CLAWS OF MEGADAM TO BE BUILT BY CHINA AND INDIA

Roumari, Kurigram,15 DEC,2010: The 'Voice from 3 Day Boat Voyage' organised
by Angikar Bangladesh started its journey from Mymensingh along the
Brahmaputra on 12 December afternoon and it was concluded at Roumari after
the dusk on 14 December,2010. The main  voice or the theme-call of the boat
voyage was 'FREE BRAHMAPUTRA FROM THE CLAWS OF MEGADAM TO BE BUILT BY CHINA
AND INDIA'.The voyage was inaugurated by an eminent educationist, President
of Bangladesh College Teachers Association, Mymensingh, Professor Riazul
Islam. Three boats sailed from Shaheb Park Ghat and stopped at 23 points on
the route including Biddyaganj, Piyarpur, Narundi, Nandina, Jamalpur,
Melandaha, Dewanganj and Roumari. At all the points local people and
organisations were apprised on the gravity of the situation emanated from
the would be built Megadams in the upstream of China and India.Thousands of
leaflets were distributed to the people along the route. The downstream
portions of Assom, Meghalaya and Bangladesh would be the most threaned part
of the basin due to the mega obstruction of the 3000km long Brahmaputra at
several upstream points by China and India. The ecology, biodiversiy,
riverine livelihood, agriculture, economy and culture of the downstream
portion including the whole Bangladesh will sure to be at perils. Engineer
Muhammad Hilaluddin, Pradip Chakraborty,Advocate Khurram, Sukumar Chowdhury
and a host of activists  participated in the 3 day voyage along the
Brahmaputra.The speakers criticised the arbitrary and unilateral moves of
both China and India in the planning  of megadam construction violating the
relevant UN Convention, 1997.
