*** EPR design certification delayed

NRC has pushed back its target for certifying Areva's EPR reactor design to
February 2013 from June
2012, citing the need for more time to resolve technical and safety issues.

In a January 6 letter to Areva released January 14, NRC said the company
still has not provided sufficient
details about how it will address what agency officials determined are
deficiencies in the containment
sump design. The sump is part of the emergency core cooling system. NRC also
said issues remain to be
resolved with the EPR's digital instrumentation and control design, as well
as with the application's
seismic and structural modeling analysis.

Areva spokesman Jarret Adams said January 14, "This is a normal part of the
regulatory review process
and we will continue to work closely with NRC to resolve the issues." Adams
said the revised NRC design
certification approval date would not affect construction of EPRs, should
the agency grant construction
permit-operating licenses to companies and they decide to proceed. UniStar
has applied to NRC for licenses
for EPRs at the Calvert Cliffs site in Maryland and at Nine Mile Point in
New York, but has asked that
the agency put its review of the latter application on hold indefinitely.
PPL Generation is seeking NRC
approval to build and operate an EPR at Bell Bend, adjacent to the
Susquehanna plant site in Pennsylvania.
