Dear friends,

There is some good news from the SC regarding the three Dantewada villages
which are suffering from hunger and food scarcity due to police attacking
them earlier this month.

Colin Gonsalves, Senior Advocate and counsel for the PUCL in the Right to
Food Case in the Supreme Court Case. ( 196/2001) just called up and informed
me that the Supreme Court Bench consisting of Justice Dalveer Bhandari and
Justice Deepak Verma today ( 29th March 2011) directed the Commissioners of
the court Dr. N C Saxena and Sh. Harsh Mander and the District Collector of
Dantewada to visit the villages of *Tadmetla, Morapalli and **Timapuram, *where
Food Scarcity and Hunger Deaths were reported and to give a Report to the
bench of the Supreme Court.

It maybe recalled that these three villages were attacked and burnt down by
COBRA and Koya Commanders and SPOs of the Chhattisgarh Police on 11th and
16th March, 2011. The forces burnt down the houses, granaries, raped women
and also killed atleast three persons ( and two missing). People and Relief
materials including food was being prevented by the Salwjudum personnel and
the SPOs from reaching these villages. The Collector's convoy of trucks was
obstructed and he was prevented from reaching, although the SDO took the
Trucks carrying relief to one of the villages, despite threats. On the 26th
of March, 2011 Swami Agnivesh who was carrying relief materials was also
prevented from reaching the area, instead he was attacked along with the
journalists who tried to accompany him.

The Court also gave a detailed order to the Union of India on the poverty
line issue which was what today's hearing was about. However, after the
court had heard this matter Colin Gonsalves filed the PUCLapplication in
this matter and also gave the SC commissioners letter to the court with
regard to the issue of scarcity of food and reported hunger deaths in the
three villages.

You could also go to the SC website and download the order from the daily
orders section by typing the case number 196/2011 and it is a civil writ
petition.
