Sathya Sai Baba is in hospital and is dying.

The doctors say he is suffering from multiple organ failure. Sai Baba is
like a god to millions of Indians and to a good number of foreigners. In his
85 -year -old life, Sai Baba has pulled off several miracles from thin air
like watches, ash, and gold chains. The kind of stuff that could hide slyly
up the long sleeves of his silk kurta.

Baba's powers do not stop at consumer items. Miraculous healing powers have
been attributed to him, as testified by thousands of patients. And there
have been several occasions when he has been visible in more than one place
at the same time. There was a time also in the eighties—when his reputation
as a holy man was at its zenith—when ash would fall from his pictures and
photographs to the wonder of his devotees.

Decades ago, when I was a child, the Baba came to Trivandrum for one of his
darshans. And as was usual with him, Baba proceeded to astonish his
disciples with a steady production of the staple consumables from the air.
At long last, my mother, wife of an intrepid and lifelong rationalist,
unable to contain herself, got up to ask the Godman more solid proof of his
powers.

"Yes, what would you like me to give you?" Baba asked.

"Well…I," my mother stammered. She had got up in a huff and was now
conscious that thousands of people were looking at her.

"Tell me, don't be afraid," Baba said. He was smiling. He looks good when he
smiles, I thought.

"No, it's alright. You are a great man."

"Still, you might want something badly. Ask me."

"No, it's fine. I'd better sit, really."

"I'm sure you want something. Make your wish known," Baba seemed to enjoy
the discomfiture of my mother.

"Well, I …," my mother said after taking a deep breath, "I want you to give
me a jackfruit," she blushed.

"A what?" Baba's smile vanished. He turned deaf. Clearly, the sleeves were
not big enough to hide a jackfruit.

Then all hell broke loose. And my mother was shouted down. We went home half
in jubilation, half in embarrassment.

I haven't thought of Sai Baba since. Except in the last few weeks. Baba is
in coma now and is not likely to recover. I am just wondering, if he was
really an avatar as he claims, why does he need a ventilator? Indeed why is
he dying an ordinary man's death?

And then I think of the jackfruit again.
