 *PRESS -INVITATION*

*PRESS CONFERENCE : 11th May, 2011*

*Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC) : 4:30 p.m.*

* *

Dear friends,

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had suspended the work on the
private Maheshwar Hydel Project being built by the S.Kumars group on the
Narmada river on 23rd of April, 2010, in light of the failure of the
rehabilitation and resettlement process and the violations of the conditions
of the statutory environmental clearance dated 1.05.2001.

Recently, the Ministery has lifted the stop work order but at the same time
it is mentioned in the order itself that the rehabilitation of oustees has
not been done. It is also mentioned therein that there has been pressure on
the MOEF from many quarters especially from PMO and he had “no option but to
lift the stop work order”. The Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh also publicly
stated that he is being forced to take illegal actions.

It is a very serious state of our democracy where an Union Ministry is not
allowed to perform its statutory and constitutional duty.* *There are also
serious financial issues involved with the project and the project promoters
– the S.Kumars group. The viability of the project is also itself in
question.

*The Narmada Bachao Andolan is holding a press conference on this issue on
11th May, 2011 at 4:30 pm in Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC), 5, Windsor
Place, Ashoka Road, New Delhi-110001, New Delhi. *

The press conference will be addressed by *Justice Rajendra Sachar,* Ex-
Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, *Shri Parashant Bhushan*, Eminent
Advocate, Supreme Court, *Shri Kuldeep Nayyar*, veteran journalist, *Shri
Alok Agarwal and Ms. Chittaroopa Palit*, activists, Narmada Bachao Andolan,
and the oustees of the Maheshwar dam.

*TODAY THE HON’BLE SUPREME COURT IS DELIVERING FINAL JUDGMENT IN OMKARESHWAR
DAM CASE AT 2 PM. MEDIA WILL BE BRIEFED ON THE JUDGMENT ALSO.*

We request you to attend the press conference and cover the same.

"Sometimes — quite often — the same people who are capable of a radical
questioning of, say, economic neo-liberalism or the role of the state, are
deeply conservative socially — about women, marriage, sexuality, our
so-called 'family values' — sometimes they're so doctrinaire that you don't
know where the establishment stops and the resistance begins. For example,
how many Gandhian/Maoist/ Marxist Brahmins or upper caste Hindus would be
happy if their children married Dalits or Muslims, or declared themselves to
be gay? Quite often, the people whose side you're on, politically, have
absolutely no place for a person like you in their social, cultural or
religious imagination. That's a knotty problem politically radical people can
come at you with the most breathtakingly conservative social views and make
nonsense of the way in which you have ordered your world and your way of
thinking about it and you have to find a way of accommodating these
contradictions within your worldview."
