*‘NAM summit in Tehran blow to West interests in Mideast’*

*A senior Iranian lawmaker says Iran's hosting of the upcoming summit of
the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) presents challenge to the interests of the
US and other global hegemonic powers in the Middle East.*

In a Tuesday interview with IRNA, Spokesman for Iran's Majlis National
Security and Foreign Policy Committee Abdolreza Mesri hailed the upcoming
NAM summit in the Iranian capital city, Tehran, as a promising “turning
point” for the Islamic Republic and added, “The US and other hegemonic
states had concerted all their efforts to prevent the conference from
taking place in Tehran.”

The Western powers, particularly the US, basically considered Tehran’s
hosting of the NAM summit as a threat to their interests in the region, he
pointed out.

Mesri alluded to the growing tide of Islamic Awakening across the Arab
world as another major threat against the geopolitical interests of the US
and the West and noted that the issue will constitute a key part of the
Tehran summit.

“Today, we witness that countries are being liberated from the manacles of
the oppressors and the liberation of the people signifies the constant
failures of the US,” the Iranian legislator said.

The 16th summit of the NAM member states will be held on August 26-31 in
the Iranian capital during which the Islamic Republic will assume the
rotating presidency of the movement for three years.

Director General for International Affairs at Iran's Presidential Office
and the spokesman for the organizing committee of the summit Mohammad Reza
Forqani said on Saturday that the heads of 35 NAM member states will attend
the Tehran summit.

Around 100 countries have so far announced that they will be present in the
meeting, Forqani added.

NAM, an international organization with 120 member states and 21 observer
countries, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major
power bloc.
