*New Delhi, July 12:* Minority leaders and clerics today slammed Narendra
Modi over his “perverse” puppy analogy, dubbed him a power-crazy politician
and drew a Hitler parallel.

Modi’s remarks came in an interview published a day after he had wished
Muslims a “Happy Ramazan”, which community leaders described as
inappropriate in the context of the holy month of fasting and dismissed as
a pre-election gimmick.

In the interview to Reuters published today, Modi was asked whether he
regretted what had happened in Gujarat in 2002.

He replied: “*Hum agar *car *chala rahen hain*… *aur koi *drive *kar raha
hai aur hum peechhe baithe hain*,*phir bhi ek chhota kutte ka bachcha bhi *
car *ke neeche aa jata hai*, *toh humein *pain feel *hota hai ki nahin?
Hota hai.*”

Reuters translated this as: “If we are driving a car, we are a driver, and
someone else is driving a car and we’re sitting behind, even then if a
puppy comes under the wheel, will it be painful or not? Of course it is.”

Zafaryab Jilani, member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said
the comment “reflects his perverse mindset and shows he has no regard for
human lives”.

All India Christian Council secretary-general John Dayal described Modi as
a “vicious politician crazy for power” and criticised his use of the puppy
analogy.

“One of the recorded facts about Hitler is that he loved his dog Blondi
dearly but it did not stop him from liquidating tens of millions of Jews
and East Europeans without a thought. Modi’s crimes in Gujarat are well
documented and I personally feel the judicial process will catch up with
him in due course of time,” Dayal said.

“He has never apologised or expressed any sincere regret for the killing of
so many people in 2002. This will hound him forever.”

Mohammed Ahmed, national secretary of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, described
Modi as a fascist and accused him of trying to polarise the country along
communal lines ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

“He is a fascist and has proved it time and again. He is a murderer of so
many Muslims in Gujarat — we can only expect the worst from him.”

Ahmed asked why, if Modi loved dogs so much, he had “presided over the
killing of so many human beings” in 2002.

“If his heart bleeds for puppies, how can such a person kill hundreds of
Muslims in Gujarat? Actually, he wants to say that he has no regard for the
lives of human beings, especially Muslims?” he said.

Zafarul Islam Khan, who heads the All India Majlis-e-Mushawarat, asked how
the people of India could vote for this *zalim *(a cruel person).

“What he has said today is beyond condemnation. He believes in divisive
politics and the analogy reflects his perverse thought processes,” he said.

Referring to Modi’s analogy, Khan said: “He was actually driving the car
during the Gujarat genocide in 2002; he was not sitting behind.”

Father Cedric Prakash, a human rights activist based in Ahmedabad,
criticised Modi for calling himself a “Hindu nationalist” in the interview.

“How can someone call himself a Hindu nationalist when our Constitution is
based on secularism? By doing this, he is showing his true colours. He has
no option but to go back to the Hindutva agenda of the RSS ahead of the
elections,” Father Prakash said.

“He is trying to build a myth of development in Gujarat by using PR firms
and trying to reach out to certain middle-class people, but his evil
designs will be defeated.”

Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Maheli, the imam of Lucknow, said Modi’s
downfall was imminent.

“He must pay for the sins he committed in Gujarat in 2002. He can now
foresee his downfall in the next election and has gone crazy. The people of
this country will teach him a lesson by defeating his evil designs.”
