SAVE OOMMEN CHANDY, STOP KOODANKULAM! As per the information from the nuclear establishment, the Koodankulam nuclear power plant is going to become a reality soon (if they have the guts to butcher thousands of people protesting against it in Tamil Nadu). Both the left front and the Congress led UDF in Kerala has been silent on this topic, giving a green signal to this grave disaster. Given the facts that the radiation from Chernobyl nuclear reactor reached up to Holland and the radiation from Fukushima reached up to California, the `literate’ majority of Kerala’s civil society has reasons to be worried. It is obvious that the leaders of the political parties representing them have no concern over their lives or of the future generations or of the environment. Since, the political leaders are not concerned about the lives of the Keralites living close to this nuclear power plant, the citizens of Kerala will have to be concerned about the lives of their leaders. The Chief Minister of Kerala is residing just 80 kilometers next to the nuclear plant in southern Tamil Nadu. The distance between the nuclear plant and the Congress party office as well as AKG Centre (the head quarters of CPI-M) and CPI office is also the same. Kerala’s legislative assembly, the press club and all important offices remain within such a short distance. It is a strong possibility that the lives of the leaders of our political parties, their families and their future generations are in danger. Therefore, even if the political representatives of Kerala are not bothered about the lives of people of Kerala, it is important that we have to be bothered about their lives. It is very important that the political leaders, however ignorant, corrupt and power-hungry they are, remain there so that the minimum remnnants of democracy can be maintained. Otherwise, the next generation of political leaders who may rule us will be those with down syndrome and cancer. I appeal to you that we should not allow such a tragedy. Therefore, in order to save the lives of our political leaders of both the ruling front and the opposition, it is too important that the Koodankulam power plant is stopped at the earliest. Otherwise, `God’s own Country’ can become `Radiation’s own Country’ very soon. Save Oommen Chandy, Stop Koodankulam! –K.P. Sasi
