Nitish plays fact checker for ModiTNN | Oct 30, 2013, 02.56 AM IST

RAJGIR: Bihar CM Nitish
Kumar<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Bihar-CM-Nitish-Kumar>
on
Tuesday turned into fact
checker<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/fact-checker>
 for Narendra Modi <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Narendra-Modi>,
highlighting "lies and inaccuracies" in the statement of his arch rival and
offering him some lessons in history.

Addressing a gathering of senior JD(U) leaders, Nitish claimed that while
attacking him on Sunday in Patna, Modi mangled facts and history to spin a
false tale.

He dismissed as falsehood Modi's claim that the Bihar CM had refused to eat
when he found himself on the same table as BJP's PM candidate at a lunch
hosted by the PMO. Modi had claimed that Kumar was leery of being snapped
breaking bread with him, and that he had to tell the Bihar CM that he could
eat as no camera was around.

"Yeh ek jhuthi kahani hai (this is a false account)" Kumar said. He also
denied that Modi played host to him in Gujarat.

Modi had said that he had made Kumar savour Gujarati delicacies when the
latter had come for a wedding, as he emphasized that he believed in norms
of decency in public life, unlike the Bihar CM who canceled a dinner invite
to the entire BJP leadership.

"The fact is that were both guests at a wedding in the family of the then
chief justice of Bihar who was from Gujarat. He never hosted me," Kumar
said.

The Bihar CM, who never mentioned Modi's name, also accused him of being
ignorant of history. "He confused the reign of Chandragupta, founder
of the Mauryan
dynasty <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Mauryan-dynasty>, with
the period when the Gupta dynasty ruled India. He also claimed that Bihar
was the seat of Takshila whereas the fact is that the ancient university
was located in the northwest region which forms part of Pakistan. And then
he said that Alexander had come as far as Ganga whereas the fact is that
the Greek warrior did not venture beyond the Sutlej," he said.

"The story is fake and so is the perception of a wave and groundswell,"
Kumar said, going on to assert that the claims of a surge for Modi were a
public relations hoax.

The dig underscored the scrutiny that Modi and his speeches are being
subjected to and also emphasized the importance for leaders to be cautious
about their statements in an age when tonnes of information can be accessed
by the click of a mouse.
