Congress complaints to EC, seeks Majithia's arrestTNN | Apr 1, 2014, 02.21

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress on Monday demanded registration of criminal
case and immediate arrest of Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia
for allegedly trying to incite violence against Congress candidate from
Amritsar, Capt Amarinder Singh, and intimidating party workers. The
complaint cited a reported statement of Majithia that "he will teach a
lesson to Congress workers by twisting their necks, if they dare to support
Capt Amarinder Singh".

In a complaint to Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath, Congress has
alleged, "Majithia made a provocative speech at Majitha in Amritsar
district on March 30, where he tried to provoke and incite people against
the Congress candidate from Amritsar parliamentary constituency, Capt
Amarinder Singh. He also used extreme intimidatory language against
Congress cadres and workers by saying that he will teach a lesson to
Congress workers by twisting their necks, if they dare to support Capt
Amarinder Singh."

"Majithia made this provocative speech at a public rally in presence of
Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and BJP candidate from Amritsar,
Arun Jaitely. Majithia's utterances cannot be dismissed as off hand.
Besides, he had said similar things in 2011 in Punjab assembly, where he
had gone to the extent of saying that he was ready to chop off Capt
Amarinder Singh's head and put it at Badal's feet," the complaint added.

The complaint further alleged that Majithia as president of Youth Akali Dal
(YAD) has been patronizing and shielding criminals and gangsters in Punjab.
"Recently, he was named as kingpin of drug trafficking in the state, by
none other than the Rs 6,000-crore drug mafia don Jagdish Bhola, who is now
in police custody," it said.

Apparently to prompt the ECI into taking action, the complaint said, "We
appreciate the strict action taken by ECI by arresting Imran Masood, a
Congress candidate from Saharanpur, for his provocative utterances against
Narendra Modi."

In Lucknow on March 29, Yoga guru Ramdev compared Congress chief Sonia
Gandhi with demoness Tadaka, a violent figure from Ramayana. Ramdev claimed
BJP leaders will slay demon rule in the country. "*She is not an ordinary
bahu (daughter-in-law). She is a foreigner bahu who has looted her entire
sasuraal*," Ramdev declaimed.

Hate speeches continue to dominate the headlines in the run up to Lok Sabha
2014 elections.

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA threatened Congress president Sonia
Gandhi and vice-presidentRahul
Gandhi,<http://www.hindustantimes.com/specials/rahulgandhitakingthelead/spl3-lid.aspx>
saying
they should be stripped and sent back to Italy if the BJP came to power.

Heeralal Regar allegedly made the comment while addressing a rally in
Rajasthan's Tonk.

"Sonia and Rahul
Gandhi<http://www.hindustantimes.com/specials/rahulgandhitakingthelead/spl3-lid.aspx>
should
be stripped off their clothes and sent back to Italy," he said.

In a telephonic interview to CNN-IBN, Regar apologised for his comment and
said he had been misquoted.

"I have not taken any name. If anyone is hurt by my comments, I apologise,"
Regar said.

Last week, Congress' Saharanpur candidate Imraan Masood had threatened to
"chop Narendra
Modi<http://www.hindustantimes.com/specials/AllaboutNarendraModi/spl3-lid.aspx>
into
pieces", inviting sharp criticism from the BJP, which termed the remark as
"inflammatory" and sought strict action by the Election Commission.
