The National Fishworkers' Forum and the Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali
Federation have accused the State government of trying to get the Coastal
Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms amended for the benefit of tourist resort
owners at the expense of the fishermen community.

Pointing out that the government had submitted a memorandum to the Centre
seeking eight amendments to the CRZ notification issued in 2011, KSMTF
secretary Anto Elias and NFF secretary T. Peter said the only hurdle facing
fishermen could be removed by a single amendment allowing the construction
of houses within 100 m of the coast and 50 m from the banks of lakes.
