[The reactor had attained criticality in July 2013. Then the "unit was shut down for maintenance in July this year and was restarted in September" and is again under shutdown since Sept. 26. ***Apparently, nobody knows as yet what is to be done***. Reportedly "discussions are on with the experts" and "senior officials of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) were not available for clarifications." That means no one is ready to go on record.]
I/II Your Excellency Mr. Alexander Kadakin: We saw a statement from you yesterday saying that the Koodankulam nuclear power project is the best and the safest in the world and that your country would sell some 22 more plants to India. But today we hear that the turbine is not working at Koodankulam. The turbines you had supplied to China (Tianwan) and to Iran (Busher) had serious problems also, and your country changed those turbines. Do you know anything about what is going on here at Koodankulam? Why are your friends at the KKNPP buying and burning so much oil? Why is the commercial operation of KKNPP-1 delayed for more than a year? We hear that there are problems not only in the turbine but also in the reactor core. Please tell all the truth you know about this Koodankulam project, Mr. Ambassador! [If other Indian citizens want to ask these and other questions to H.E. CHENNAI: A major problem in the first atomic power unit's turbine at Kudankulam has caused uncertainty on its early commissioning, said a source. "The turbine of the first unit has developed some problem. It seems some component inside the turbine turned loose and damaged the turbine blades," the source told IANS preferring anonymity Monday. According to him, ***discussions are on with the experts*** [emphasis added - it clearly shows up that even after a month of commencement of the shutdown nobody as yet knows what is to be done] whether to replace the faulty equipment from the turbine of the second unit so that the first unit could be run at the earliest. The first unit stopped operations Sep 26 due to turbine problem. The unit was shut down for maintenance in July this year and was restarted in September. However, senior officials of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) were not available for clarifications. Speaking to IANS, G Sundarrajan, an anti-nulcear power activist who has filed a case against KNPP in the Supreme Court questioning the safety, said: ***"Even before starting its commercial operations the world class third generation plant is on the blink."*** [Emphasis added.] India's atomic power plant operator NPCIL is setting up two 1,000 MW Russian reactors at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district, 650 km from here. The total outlay for the project is over Rs.17,000 crore. The KNPP is India's first pressurised water reactor belonging to the light water reactor category. The first unit attained criticality July 2013, which is the beginning of the fission process. The unit has started power generation and has been connected to the southern grid. Work on commissioning the second unit is in progress. The unit is expected to start the fission process next month. -- Peace Is Doable -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
