*| **PLANNING MEETING IN SUPPORT OF THE BHOPAL SURVIVORS AT JANTAR MANTAR*
Dear friends,
As we all know that 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the world's worst
industrial disaster from the Union Carbide India Limited factory in Bhopal,
Madhya Pradesh. The failure to deliver justice for the Bhopal survivors and
victims is a stark reality and significant failure of the government and
once again revealing the real face of the corporate unaccountability.
The Bhopal survivors who have been constantly interrogating the assassins
of collective memory further call for greater solidarity for justice from
us in this hour. The Bhopal survivors are planning to come to Delhi for a
weeklong waterless hunger fast and dharna to pressure the Prime Minister to
seek adequate compensation from Union Carbide and Dow Chemical. This issue
has been raised for last 4 years and even though several promises have been
made, nothing much has changed on the ground. On 10th November, the dharna
will begin with a press conference in Jantar Mantar at noon on hunger fast
and from the 11th the protesters will be quitting water too. The dharna has
been organized under the joint banner of five survivors’ organisations.
In solidarity with the Bhopal survivors, Delhi Solidarity Group invites you
for a planning meeting on the *7th of November, Friday, 4.00pm at F 10/12
Basement, Malviya Nagar New Delhi – 110017*. The brief agenda will include
the planning of the logistics, mobilizing support groups from different
quarters, raising local resources and the matters arising from the meeting.
We kindly invite your presence to this meeting and a line of confirmation
would be deeply appreciated.
In solidarity

"Sometimes — quite often — the same people who are capable of a radical
questioning of, say, economic neo-liberalism or the role of the state, are
deeply conservative socially — about women, marriage, sexuality, our
so-called 'family values' — sometimes they're so doctrinaire that you don't
know where the establishment stops and the resistance begins. For example,
how many Gandhian/Maoist/ Marxist Brahmins or upper caste Hindus would be
happy if their children married Dalits or Muslims, or declared themselves
to be gay? Quite often, the people whose side you're on, politically, have
absolutely no place for a person like you in their social, cultural or
religious imagination. That's a knotty problem politically radical people
can come at you with the most breathtakingly conservative social views and
make nonsense of the way in which you have ordered your world and your way
of thinking about it and you have to find a way of accommodating these
contradictions within your worldview."
