[The North-East is known for its endemic violence.

This violence can be classified into broadly two categories.
One, violence between the State and various insurgent groups from
different ethnic groups.
Two, violence between different ethnic groups.
In this second category, quite often Bengali-speaking Muslims
constitute one side - largely at the receiving end. But not always.
Long drawn out road blockages were resorted to on account of conflicts
between Naga and Manipuri groups in not too distant past.
Even this time, "Adivasis" are targets of violence perpetrated by a
faction of Bodo militants. Like the Bengali-speaking Muslims, these
"Adivasis" are also looked upon as "outsiders" and enjoy little
sympathy, despite being there for generations.]

Assam violence: What led to Bodoland blood bath....

Once again Assam remained witness to mindless violence and killing. In
the past 24 hours, no less than 75 people are dead. Was this a mere
militant attack to retaliate counter insurgency operation of security
forces or is it the beginning of a larger political game where
innocents are pawns?

Guwahati: The entire nation was once again shocked and left speechless
as television channels aired horrific visuals of a carnage that Assam
has witnessed for past 24 hours. The blood bath has left 75 dead, 65
of them killed on Tuesday evening when militants from National
Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) Songbhijit faction stormed into
huts of Adivasi or the tea tribes who work in the tea gardens of
Assam, in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts. The fallout - 65 people
were gunned down , nearly 100 injured.

Today the Adivasis retaliated as a mob tried to storm in to the
Dhekiajuli police station. Police resorted to firing as a result of
which 5 Adivasi protesters have been killed. Meanwhile another five
people belonging to the Bodo community died in retaliatory killings in
Chirang and Kokrajhar distirct . Curfew is in place in Kokrajhar and
Sonitpur and additional paramilitary forces are being rushed to the
state on an urgent basis.

Assam has witnessed such mindless violence for over three decades now.
What is even more disturbing is that majority of those who are killed
are women and children.

So what led to this mayhem? Tehelka tries to analyze - New Delhi is
going steadfast with the peace parleys with the Pro-talk faction of
NDFB. Thus IK Songbhijit, the chief of the NDFB(S) thought to be in
hiding in Sagaing division of Myanmar , wanted to send across a
message to Tarun Gogoi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi that they are
strong enough to strike at will.

In last one month in entire Bodoland area, the counter insurgency
operations against NDFB (S) was stepped up, which resulted in arrest
of many NDFB(S) cadres - some of them were also killed in encounters.
NDFB had then threatened to avenge the killings of its cadres.

Police sources says that the Adivasis who live close to the Bodo
villages in Bodoland territorial Autonomous districts (BTAD) had been
tipping the security forces of the whereabouts of NDFB(S) cadres.

In fact 40 NDFB cadres have been killed in last six months. So by
killing Adivasis , the NDFB(S) might have tried to send a strong
warning to the community not to side with the security forces.

Only two days back, chief minister Tarun Gogoi had warned NDFB (S) of
action and also overruled the outfit as a serious threat. Intelligence
sleuth believe that the banned rebel groups were determined to prove
the chief minister wrong.

In fact a close aide of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has revealed
to Tehelka that the state government and the chief minister himself is
very worried about retaliatory attacks on Bodo community. The last
thing that Gogoi would not want is the militant attack sparking off
another round of ethnic clashes in Bodoland.
