THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is a move at the official level to give
registration to Persian boats which had been banned in the Kerala coast by
the government, the Kerala Swathanthra Matsya Thozhilali Federation has
alleged.

"If registration is given to these boats, which do overfishing, it will
ruin the fisheries. This will, in turn, adversely affect the livelihood of
lakhs of fishermen in the state," the office-bearers of the Federation said
in a statement issued here on Friday.

"There is also a Supreme Court order against the Persian boats," they
pointed out.

Federation state president P P John, National Fish Workers' Forum secretary
T Peter, along with other leaders of the community, submitted a memorandum
to the Chief Minister, the Fisheries Minister, Fisheries Secretary and
Fisheries Director against the alleged move. They also warned of strong
agitation if registration was given to the boats
