["He (Kasab) never asked for non-vegetarian food. He didn't like non-vegetarian food it seemed and for the record we never offered him non-vegetarian food. He used to get the same food rice, dal and chapatis as other prisoners." Mr Dhamne was the superintendent of Arthur Road Jail back then.
The deliberate lie mouthed by Ujjwal Nikam while pleading the subject case before the court appears to be a serious case of professional misconduct, even if not perjury.] http://www.asianage.com/mumbai/ajmal-kasab-preferred-veg-food-ex-jail-chief-323 Ajmal Kasab preferred veg food: Ex-jail chief Mar 22, 2015 | Age Correspondent | Mumbai A day after Maharashtra government's special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam created a flutter by claiming that he had cooked up the story of terrorist Ajmal Kasab relishing mutton biryani inside his high-security Anda cell in Arthur Road Jail, a senior police officer who was the superintendent of the jail back then told this newspaper that the terrorist preferred vegetarian food. Speaking to The Asian Age on Saturday, DIG of prisons (western region) Rajendra Dhamne said, ***"He (Kasab) never asked for non-vegetarian food. He didn't like non-vegetarian food it seemed and for the record we never offered him non-vegetarian food. He used to get the same food rice, dal and chapatis as other prisoners." Mr Dhamne was the superintendent of Arthur Road Jail back then.*** [Emphasis added.] Mr Nikam was the special public prosecutor in the terrorist attacks case that took place in Mumbai on November 26, 2008. Four years later, in the same month, Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive, was executed. Reacting to the 'rumour' spread by Mr Nikam, Mr Dhamne said, "It's true that Kasab asking for mutton biryani was a rumour. Back then just to clear the air we had written to the court that he never asked for mutton biryani, nor was he ever served any mutton biryani." Advocate Abbas Kazmi, who was Kasab's defence lawyer appointed by the court, said that he had denied the biryani rumours, but his denial was not given any importance then. "I always knew that it was a propaganda by the prosecution," he said. Mr Nikam, who was also the public prosecutor in the 1993 bomb blast case, revealed that it was a rumour while speaking at a global conference on counter-terrorism in Jaipur. Mr Nikam said he did this as the media was trying to create an "emotional wave" for Kasab. "Media was minutely observing his body language and he was well aware of it. One day, in the courtroom, he bowed his head and wiped his eyes. Moments later, electronic media broke the news -- tears in Kasab's eyes. It was Raksha Bandhan that day, and panel discussions were started in the media on it. Some guessed Kasab got emotional in memory of his sister and some even went on to question whether he was a terrorist or not, Mr Nikam said. "This kind of emotional wave and atmosphere had to be stopped. So, after that I gave a statement to the media saying Kasab had demanded mutton biryani in the jail," he said. -- Peace Is Doable -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
