Congress and BJP have won ten and five seats respectively, while six seats have gone to independant candidates. Voters exercised their rights and sealed the fate of 568 candidates, who are aspiring to enter the political corridors of the Rs 2,000-crore Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), voting for which was held on Wednesday. There are 111 seats in this civic body. This elections the voter-turnout dropped by 2% as NMMC recorded mere 48.35% till 5.30 pm. Till 3.30 pm, the voter turn-out was 41% and political parties were hoping that it will reach 50%. A polling percentage of less than 50 could mean an edge for the NCP. However, compared to last NMMC elections, when voting was 50.66%, this elections, voting dropped by 2% despite of increased voters. A test of the political mettle of Navi Mumbai's NCP strongman Ganesh Naik, Belapur MLA Manda Mhatre, and Shiv Sena leader Vijay Nahata, results are expected to be out soon. Naik, who has dominated NMMC's affairs ever since its inception in 1992, is facing a tough challenge from the Sena-BJP alliance, which is looking at replicating its Lok Sabha and assembly success even at the civic body-level.
