Aadhaar demand stuns insurance cover applicants

MUMBAI: Several applicants who wish to enrol for the Pradhan Mantri
insurance schemes have been turned away for want of an Aadhaar card.
***Two Supreme Court orders of March 25, 2014, and March 16, 2015,
dictate that the government can not link welfare schemes to Aadhaar
card*** [emphasis added].

May 30 is the deadline for signing up for the two insurance schemes.
The Centre-launched schemes offer accident and life cover for a
premium of Rs 12 and Rs 330 per annum, respectively.

Jaywant Patil, who works with a PR firm in Borivli, approached the
Yogi Nagar branch of Corporation Bank to sign up but could not do so.

"I have a voter's I-card, PAN card and ration card, but none of these
are acceptable," Patil said.

The scheme helpline 1800-180-1111 also informed that an Aadhaar number
was a must.
