IIT-Madras revokes ban on student groupM T Saju,TNN | Jun 7, 2015, 08.09 PM IST

CHENNAI: IIT-Madras on Sunday revoked the ban on the Ambedkar Periyar
Study Circle (APSC) following talks between IIT-M director Bhaskar
Ramamurthi and members of the APSC, according to a joint statement
released by the institute and the student group.

The discussion forum for students was temporarily derecognized
following an anonymous complaint that it had tried to spread "hatred"
against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his policies. It was also
alleged that the group had tried to rake up caste politics on the
campus.

IIT-M had promised to review its decision to derecognize the APSC if
it agreed to comply with guidelines. The management said the student
group had violated one of the guidelines by using the institute's name
without permission.

"The APSC representatives conveyed their views to the director; in
particular, that the guidelines for independent student bodies was
published on the website on April 18, 2015, while their meeting took
place on April 14, 2015. After discussions with the director, he
requested them to meet the dean of students. In view of the above, the
dean reinstated the recognition of APSC as an independent student
body," said the joint statement.

apology from dean

IIT-M accepted some of the demands put forward by the student group.
However, it rejected the APSC's demand for an unconditional apology
from the dean of students.

After consultation with the APSC representatives, Prof Milind Brahme
was appointed as the faculty advisor. Brahme had consented to advise
the APSC as required on the guidelines for independent student bodies,
it said.

The statement said the board of students had met and discussed the
issues raised by the APSC regarding modifications and suggestions for
ensuring uniform application of the guidelines for independent student
bodies. "Some of these will be implemented by the office of dean
(students), while the student affairs council, board of students and
senate will take up the modifications in due course for consideration
as per established procedure," it said.

Speaking to TOI, Akhil Bharatan, member of the APSC, said they were
happy as the management accepted most of their demands. "We are happy
that the ban on APSC has been revoked and democracy is back on the
campus. It has been accepted that all the independent students' bodies
will be given equal privileges and rights on the campus," said Akhil.

The issue was settled as both the parties expressed satisfaction over
the progress in the meeting. "APSC and the dean of students expressed
satisfaction that the matter has been closed," said the release.
