Trouble continued for self-styled godman Asaram Bapu—in prison for the
last 20 months on charges of sexually assaulting a minor—after his
bail plea was turned down for the sixth consecutive time on Saturday.

Rejecting the contention of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy—who had
appeared in Asaram’s defence—Additional District and Sessions Judge
Manoj Kumar Vyas said someone who was accused of a crime of this
nature, did not deserve bail.

Reacting to the decision, Swamy said he would make another attempt at
bailing the controversial godman out.

Before Swamy, high profile lawyer Ram Jethmalani had also tried
bailing Asaram out, but to no avail.

Asaram’s bail plea has earlier been turned down twice by the lower
courts and the Gujarat High Court, and once by the Supreme Court.
Besides, his bail applications have been rejected consecutively by
various Gujarat courts, inlcuding the High Court.

This time around, Swamy had argued that the case against Asaram was
fabricated and that he deserved bail. However, prosecution lawyer P C
Solanki opposed Swamy’s contention and requested the court to look at
who the accused was, the age of his victim and the circumstances under
which he had committed the crime, before arriving at a decision.
Judge Vyas admitted the prosecution’s arguments and rejected Asaram’s bail plea.

BJP leader Swamy expressed his reaction to the court’s decision in a
series of tweets.
“Waiting for the Asaram bail rejection order. If it is because the
sixth material has not been examined then the door is open to re-
apply,” he tweeted.
