We are/were in the CNDP (Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace)
for over a decade and a half. (The CNDP was inaugurated by the end of
2000. But preparatory works had started in '98 or '99.)
It's a terrible loss.

New Delhi: The well-known journalist and commentator Praful Bidwai –
whose syndicated columns on politics, foreign policy, the environment
and political economy provided a critical, left-wing perspective on
national and international developments for over four decades – passed
away in Amsterdam on Monday night, The Wire has learned.

Bidwai, who was 65, died after choking on his food, a close friend of
his said. He was in the Dutch capital for a conference.

He wrote regularly for magazines and newspapers across India and the
world, besides being an anti-nuclear activist and campaigner. He was a
founding member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament Peace, the
group set up after the 1998 Pokhran tests.

Praful Bidwai was the author of several books, including the 1999 New
Nukes: India, Pakistan and Global Nuclear Disarmament, co-authored
with the political scientist and activist Achin Vanaik. Bidwai’s
latest book on the Indian Left was due to be released later this year.
“Praful was a committed, courageous and articulate voice on the Left,”
Vanaik told The Wire, and had “an extraordinary command over a vast
range of subjects.”

Born in Nagpur, Bidwai worked in the Times of India for many years as
a Senior Assistant Editor before embarking on a freelance career that
made his byline a household name across India. He wrote a regular
column for Frontline and Hindustan Times for several years.

Bidwai had also worked as a Professorial Fellow at the Centre for
Social Development, New Delhi, and as a Fellow at the Nehru Memorial
Museum and Library.

He was a long-time Fellow of the Transnational Institute, the
Amsterdam-based organisation of international scholar-activists
including Susan George and Walden Bello.

A bachelor, he is survived by two sisters.

Journalist, social science researcher, human rights activist and
Rediff.com contributor, Praful Bidwai has passed away. He was 66.

He is believed to have asphyxiated while eating food in Amsterdam on
Monday night. He was in the Dutch capital for a conference.

Bidwai wrote on environment, global justice and peace and was one of
South Asia's most widely published columnists whose articles have
appeared on Rediff.com, The Times of India, Frontline, etc. He has
also been a regular contributor to The Guardian, Le Monde Diplomatique
and Il Manifesto.

His website, Prafulbidwai.org reads: "He has co-authored or
contributed to several books on political economy, the environment,
sustainable development, science and technology, ethnicity and
politics, North-South relations, and security and nuclear issues.
Bidwai is a founder-member of the Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament
and Peace, an umbrella organisation of Indian peace groups founded in
2000.

He received the Sean MacBride International Peace Prize, 2000 of
International Peace Bureau, Geneva and London, one of the world's
oldest peace organisations. Bidwai read science and technology,
philosophy and economics at the Indian Institute of Technology,
Bombay. "

RIP Mr Bidwai, you will be missed.
