FTII row: Anupam Kher says institute needs much qualified person

Supporting students in their protest against Gajendra Chauhan's
appointment as the chairman of Film and Television Institute of India
(FTII), actor Anupam Kher said that the premier institue needed a
much-qualified person as chairman.
Last month Chauhan, who was seen as Yudhisthira on TV epic
Mahabharata, took charge as the chairman of the Pune-based institute's
governing council but his appointment has been under constant
criticism by current and former students of the institute.
"I personally feel that FTII represents a certain art form... it does
certainly need a person having a great body of work which means he is
supposed to know world cinema, he is supposed to know the present
state of cinema like editing. But certainly FTII needs somebody who is
much more qualified than whatever Ganjendra ji's qualifications are
coming across," Kher said.
"I certainly do not think Gajendra ji is qualified as a producer,
director or actor," he added.
Kher also said that the government institute should be autonomous certainly.
However he advised protesting students to attend their classes. FTII
students, who alleged that Chauhan lacked "stature and vision" to head
the institution, have been boycotting classes and academic work in
protest.
"I feel students who are on strike, should go back, make movies,
attend classes because the Chairman is not directly involved in
day-to-day functioning of FTII," Kher said.

Amid mounting pressure for the removal of Gajendra Chauhan as the
controversial chairperson of the Film and Television Institute of
India governing council, a section within the BJP is pushing for the
induction of filmstar-MP Shatrughan Sinha as FTII’s interim head.
Mr Sinha, himself an FTII alumnus, offered to mediate between the
agitating students and the information and broadcasting ministry in a
bid to end the crisis. Sources said Mr Sinha had paid a surprise,
late-night visit to the campus Tuesday, met director D.J. Narain and
said he was willing to mediate on the issue. It is learnt several BJP
leaders want him to be named interim head of the FTII governing
council.
The Bihar BJP leader has been known to speak his mind against the
party line in the past, with his vocal dissent on several issues
marking him as a “rebel” in the party.
Over the past days students have been agitating after the appointment
of TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as FTII governing council chairperson. A
delegation of students and alumni met I&B minister Arun Jaitley Friday
to seek Mr Chauhan’s removal, but this demand was rejected, and
sources said Mr Chauhan is unlikely to be removed.
