Teesta Setelvad is no witch to be hunted. Her credentials as a secular person, a media person and human rights activist are well known all over India and abroad. The volume of work which she and her husband Javed Anand have consistently done against communal violence in this country from 1992 onwards is perhaps something much more than anybody could imagine. Whatever she has been doing has been perfectly within the existing legal frameworks in this country. Those who have broken or keep breaking the law are the ministers who rule us. Those who facilitate communal violence are still ruling us. Huge scandals on corruption and for facilitating some of the biggest communal violence in this country are still haunting them. The criminals are protected and Teesta is targeted. Any intelligent person knows why. She dared to do what you and I did not dare. The signal given is not just of a vengeance. The signal is also that by touching media persons and human rights activists like Teesta, they are cleaning up the ground for something more severe. It is time for all secular and democratic forces to rise up and demand to stop witch hunting of Teesta Setelvad. Preserve the space for dissent. Resist Silent Emergency! Resist fascism! Protect Indian Democracy.
