>From the Sedition Law to AFSPA to MISA to TADA to POTA to UAPA and many
other such laws, the history of draconian laws in this country is quite a
long journey. The latest on the public debate is is the draconian law
called the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Under this law,
anybody can be caught under mere suspicion alone and put behind the bars
forever without bail. Abdul Nasar Maudany and many others are languishing
in our jails under this draconian law as under trials without any evidence
or witnesses. Evidences and witnesses are only pieces of fiction. But what
we have to ask today is who introduced this anti people law called UAPA? It
was during the Congress regime of Manmohan Singh that this law was
introduced. It was also during Manmohan Singh that the draconian law called
POTA was repealed due to public resistance. POTA was repealed, but the
innocent prisoners under POTA are still in jail. Those who have spent long
years in jail as under trials and finally when a judge declares that `you
are innocent’, they come out as dead living bodies since their families,
friends and all support mechanisms have been targeted as anti-nationals for
many years. They do not get any compensation for the crime of the Indian
judicial system facilitated by laws enacted by an anti-people State. But
why was UAPA introduced? This draconian law was introduced due to a simple
reason: POTA had to be repealed due to public resistance and they needed
another draconian law to facilitate Sangh Parivar, since UAPA was primarily
aimed .for targeting the minorities in this country. Then why did our
people’s representatives raise their hands in support of this draconian
anti-people law? Well, this is a comedy situation. If there is anything
that is lacking in our people’s representatives in a major way, that organ
is called `brain’. They simply do not have the time to study any law and
understand the negative implications on what they support. Perhaps, we
should forgive them, since Jesus Christ has said that: `Forgive them, for
they do not know what they are doing.’ But when people are resisting
against this draconian law called UAPA in different quarters, how come our
people’s representatives are silent? Is it a matter of simple ignorance
alone??
