It is extremely unfortunate that CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan has made a comment in support of the controversial and disasterous Vizhinjam Transit Harbour Project. Narendra Modi and Oommen Chandy Governments are planning not just a sale of Kerala’s land, water, hills from the Western Ghats, bio diversity of the ocean and livelihood of thousands of fisher folk in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, but a blanket donation of precious natural resources as well as lives of the coastal people to corporate giant Adani. Around two third of the total budget of over 7,000 crores have to be borne by the Central and State Governments. No returns are expected. Adani is not going to lose. Comrade Thomas Isaac had already opposed the project in terms of economic viability. Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP), Kerala Swatantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation and various organisations in Kerala have already opposed the project due to its negative impacts on environment, livelihood of people as well as on economic grounds. The economic debts of the UDF Government today has reached more than 44,000 crores. Thousands of crores to be donated to Adani both by the Central and State Governments will only add up to such debts. Ultimately, who will repay these debts? The burden will be on the people of Kerala. Oommen Chandy will not repay the debts from his house. Will Pinarayi Vijayan take such responsibility? There is still time to rethink. I hope, the sane minds within the left parties will take immediate steps to inform and discuss with comrade Pinarayi Vijayan and rectify the present mistake. If not, it will amount to direct cheating of Kerala’s public.
