Early returns Saturday morning from Friday's parliamentary polls show that none of the three competing political factions will win a majority alone in the 290-seat parliament but reformists seeking greater democratic changes are heading to win their strongest presence in parliament since 2004 at the expense of hard-liners. Officials are yet to release early results but reports in the semiofficial Fars and Mehr news agencies and a count conducted by The Associated Press show that hard-liners are the main losers of the vote. Friday's election for Iran's parliament and a powerful clerical body known as the Assembly of Experts was the first since Iran's landmark nuclear deal with world powers last year. Some 28 million voters participated in Friday's elections by 9 P.M. local time, the Iranian Central Elections Supervisory Body spokesperson said, according to the Mehr news agency. However, voting has been extended in the Tehran area and in other major cities due to "massive participation," the spokesperson said. With 54 million elligible voters, the figure cited represents a voter turnout of slightly over 50 percent. In the last two elections, those figures proved controversial, as observers insisted that numbers were manipulated to exhibit a higher voter turnout rate. Iran's supreme leader urged voters to turn out in big numbers for the two crucial elections on Friday, saying such a show of strength would frustrate Tehran's enemies. "I suggest our nation to cast their votes early ... they should choose their candidates wisely ... a big turnout will disappoint Iran's enemies," Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said after casting his vote.
