Labour defied dire predictions with a steady performance in the English council elections, with only 22 councillors lost overall with 111 of the 124 councils declared. In the London Assembly Labour won 9 out of 14 constituency seats - seizing Merton & Wandsworth in posh South West London from the Tories. Labour's mayors were returned in Salford and Liverpool. It was a surprisingly good night for the Lib Dems, who gained a handful of council seats across England and thrashed the SNPs to seize two Scottish seats. But overall the party's tally remained at 5 after losses elsewhere. The results were the first test of Jeremy Corbyn at the ballot box, and there was enough for all parties to be both happy and disappointed about.
