*The Air port Racket in Kerala: * One of the biggest developmental achievement of the UDF Government as per the election campaign was an air port in Kannur. Thalasseri Vigilance Court has ordered an enquiry into the issue to look into the financial mishandling, economic loss for the Government , misuse of land and environmental issues, reports Janayugam Daily of June 18, 2016. Ninety acres of land was given for rent at the rate of Rs. 100 per acre a year rejecting the official warnings from the Revenue Principal Secretary. Similarly, the Environment Ministry had permitted removal of 30,421 trees for the project. But 45 days before acquiring the permission, the Government provided permission to cut down to cut down one lakh trees from the area to private lobbies. The money which is received from the removal of these trees is not disclosed so far, as per the report. The environmental activists are yet to take up the issue of removal of one lakh trees in the name of this air port. The environmental activists are also yet to take up the issue of potential removal of ten thousand trees just for the construction of a road towards Adani’s Vizhinjam Transit Harbour. In Vaynad, the Government has no land to provide for the Adivasis, but they have hundreds of acres of land to provide for an air port in the region!
As per the plans of Air port constructions today, there would be at least ten air ports in Kerala, a small state which is only 590 km long. It means that there would be an air port at an average distance of every 59 km in Kerala, if this ridiculous racket called `Development through Air ports’ is pursued. I am sure, if it goes on like this, our politicians will soon ask for an airport in every Panchayat in Kerala!
