‘I cannot live with the idea of Modi and me in the same frame’, senior
journalist Akshaya Mukul refuses to receive Ramnath Goenka award from
Modi

Veteran journalist Akshaya Mukul has refused to accept the prestigious
Ramnath Goenka Award for journalism from Prime Minister Narendra Modi
on Wednesday.

“I cannot live with the idea of Modi and me in the same frame, smiling
at the camera even as he hands over the award to me,” Caravan Magazine
quoted Mukul as saying.

Mukul, Senior Assistant Editor with the Times of India, has boycotted
the award ceremony organised in New Delhi. Instead, Krishan Chopra,
the publisher and chief editor at HarperCollins India, the publishers
of his book, Gita Press and the Making of Hindu India, received the
award on his behalf, the Caravan Magazine reported.

Mukul was conferred with the Ramnath Goenka Award for his book Gita
Press and the Making of Hindu India. The book received critical
acclaim from various corners such as the Tata Literature Live! Book of
the Year Award, and the Atta Galatta-Bangalore Literature Festival
Book Prize for best non-fiction work in English.

His book sheds light on the ideological moorings of Hindutva as well
as the lynchpin of the Narendra Modi’s politics.

According to reports, the management’s decision to invite the Prime
Minister has irked some of top editors of The Indian Express as well.

The Express Group instituted the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in
Journalism Awards. The Awards aim to celebrate excellence in
journalism, recognize courage and commitment and showcase outstanding
contributions and individuals every year.

The media under Modi regime has been under attack across the country.
Over the past two years, criticism or even questions regarding the
government’s claims have been dangerously branded as a
‘anti-national’. This is symptomatic of a culture that has thrived and
grown during Modi’s tenure as the prime minister: intolerance against
any form of dissent.

Meanwhile, the ‘guest of honour’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave
away awards to 28 categories for exceptional work in print, broadcast
and online journalism in English, Hindi and regional languages.
