Why Modi is silent on BJP leader's arrest? asks Cong

The Congress today targeted the BJP after the arrest of its women's
wing leader Juhi Chowdhury for her alleged involvement in a child
trafficking case, and asked why the Prime Minister was silent over the
issue.

"Prime Minister Modi is silent on the sex racket in WB (West Bengal),
but makes divisive statements in UP (Uttar Pradesh)," Congress leader
Manpreet Badal said.

Addressing a press conference here, the Congress leader said it is
"glaringly shameful" that the West Bengal BJP Mahila Morcha general
secretary Juhi Chowdhury has been arrested for her involvement in a
child trafficking racket.

He claimed Juhi has now told the police that she was advised to escape
to Nepal by an MP of BJP.

"Who is this BJP MP?" he asked.

He alleged that the owner of the Jalpaiguri orphanage publicly stated
that Juhi had sought assistance for her from BJP Rajya Sabha member
Roopa Ganguly and BJP National General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya
for "assistance and necessary clearances from the government" for the
facility.

"These allegations are indeed shocking, disgusting and utterly
shameful, reflecting a deep rooted malice in the BJP," he said.

"(Prime Minister Narendra) Modi must also tell the nation how and why
the names of BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and
BJP nominated Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly surfaced in a child
trafficking racket in West Bengal?" he asked.

"But in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, a spy ring was exposed and PM Modi
is silent. In West Bengal, a BJP general secretary of their women's
wing was arrested for allegedly running a sex racket...," he alleged.

Chowdhury was arrested from Batasia area close to the Indo-Nepal
border last night by the CID for her alleged involvement in the
Jalpaiguri child trafficking case.

The BJP has, however, denied her involvement and termed her arrest as
a "conspiracy".

West Bengal: BJP leaders Roopa Ganguly and Kailash Vijayvargiya named
in child-trafficking case

FP StaffMar, 01 2017 18:46:10 IST

A key accused in the child-trafficking case in West Bengal has alleged
that Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) party national general secretary
Kailash Vijayvargiya and state women's wing president Roopa Ganguly
were involved in the racket.

According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, the accused Chandana
Chakraborty, who ran a child care home in north Bengal, alleged that
West Bengal Mahila Morcha general secretary Juhi Chowdhury approached
Ganguly and Vijayvargiya to “resolve some issues” about her shelter
home.

Chakraborty said she approached Chowdhury for help and was assured
that her problems would be resolved, The Hindu reported.

According to a report in the New Indian Express, West Bengal Crime
Investigation Department (CID) has claimed that it has audio evidence
of conversation between Chowdhury and Kailash Vijayvargiya's secretary
and based on Chandana's allegations, may summon Vijayvargiya and
Ganguly, besides Vijayvargiya's secretary for interrogation

Chowdhury was arrested on Tuesday night from Batasia area close to the
India-Nepal border in Darjeeling. She was produced in the Chief
Judicial Magistrate's court in Siliguri, on Wednesday and remanded in
CID custody for 12 days, a senior CID official said.

She is the fourth person arrested in the Jalpaiguri district case
which has created a storm in Bengal with its political connotations.

Chowdhury, who was on the run for the last few days after her name was
linked to the case involving trafficking of at least 17 children, was
brought to Matigara police station here for interrogation.

CID sources said the agency has recovered a diary with detailed
entries about her connection with the traffickers from fellow accused
Manas Bhowmik who was arrested earlier this month.

According to the diary, Chowdhury accompanied prime accused Chandana
Chakraborty to Delhi on 2 February and held a meeting with Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya.

They were supposed to meet a Union Minister to discuss about the
adoption centres in Jalpaiguri, sources said.

Following the court order, the BJP state committee removed the
Jalpaiguri district women wing (Mohila morcha) leader from the party,
stating her activity has harmed the image of BJP.

"Chakraborty went to Delhi with a child trafficking accused woman
without the party's consent. She is removed from BJP as her activity
is harmful for the party's image," said BJP state president Dilip
Ghosh.

Chowdhury's arrest came on a day when Chakraborty, arrested in
connection with the scandal earlier, blamed her for wrongdoing.

Chakraborty, chairperson of Jalpaiguri-based child adoption centre
Bimala Sishu Griho, was arrested with Chief Adoption Officer Sonali
Mondal for selling at least 17 children through shady adoption deals.

Chakraborty on Tuesday admitted going to Delhi with Chowdhury to seek
"help" for her organisation and claimed that the BJP leader did all
the negotiations with the senior leadership while she was in a
different room.

"Juhi assured me she would sort out all the issues," Chakraborty said.

"I haven't talked to anyone, Juhi did. She might have talked to (BJP
leaders) Roopa Ganguly and Kailash Vijayvargiya. I was sitting in a
separate room. We are innocent. We will definitely help in the
investigation," she said.

On Wednesday morning, Ghosh said that his party's legal cell will try
to get Chowdhury out on bail.

Ghosh said the party was not calling her innocent or guilty at this
stage, but the law of the land should prevail.

"Juhi is our party worker. I know her. Now suddenly her name has been
linked into the case. So we are taking our own time. That doesn't mean
that we are calling her innocent.

"She has to be tried according to the law. If she is guilty, the party
will not take her side. She should be punished as per law of the land.
Our legal cell will try to secure her bail because till now we don't
hold her guilty," Ghosh said.

Queried about Chakraborty naming her, Ganguly shot back: "Why should I
respond to what an accused has said?"

BJP leader Juhi Chowdhury, who was arrested for her alleged link to a
child trafficking racket in West Bengal and sent to 12 days CID
custody, has named some “influential political personalities” during
her grilling, a CID source said on Thursday.

“Juhi is being interrogated about her alleged involvement in the child
trafficking racket. She has mentioned the names of some influential
political personalities during interrogation which we cannot reveal
right now for the sake of the investigation,” said an officer of the
Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The officer also confirmed that Chowdhury would be interrogated
together with prime accused Chandana Chakraborty for clarity in the
case.

“We would interrogate them together as well as separately as we need
the corroboration and contradiction from both of them,” he added.

Chowdhury, a former leader of Bharatiya Janata Party’s Mahila Morcha
(women’s wing) in Jalpaiguri district, was arrested by the CID on
Tuesday night from Batasia area, close to the India-Nepal border in
Darjeeling and was sent by a court to 12 days CID custody on
Wednesday.

BJP removes leader Juhi Chowdhury arrested for alleged child
trafficking in Bengal
Following the court order, the BJP removed her from the post of the
state secretary of the Mahila Morcha.

“Chowdhury went to Delhi with a woman accused of child trafficking
without the party’s consent. She has been removed from her post in BJP
as her activity is harmful for the party’s image,” said BJP state
president Dilip Ghosh.

According to sources, Chowdhury fled to a relative’s house in Nepal
for a few days to escape from the investigating agency before
returning to the village near the Indo-Nepal border.

CID sleuths are also looking for her father Rabindranarayan Chowdhury,
a local BJP leader who looked after Juhi’s financial transactions.

Chowdhury’s arrest came after Chandana Chakraborty, arrested earlier
in the same scandal, blamed her for wrongdoing and accused the BJP
leader of negotiating with political heavyweights in Delhi about her
child adoption centre.

“Juhi assured me she would sort out all the issues. She might have
talked to (BJP leaders) Roopa Ganguly and Kailash Vijayvargiya. I was
sitting in a separate room. We are innocent. We will definitely help
in the investigation,” Chakraborty alleged. Both Ganguly and
Vijayvargiya have rubbished the charges.

The state BJP leadership, which conceded that the party was “under
some discomfort” after the young leader’s arrest, said it would not
take her side if she is found guilty.

CID’s additional director general Rajesh Kumar, meanwhile, claimed
Chowdhury was directly involved in trafficking of newborn children.

However, Chowdhury claimed she was “innocent”. “I am innocent. They
can’t prove me guilty,” she told the media.

CID sources said the agency has recovered from fellow accused Manas
Bhowmik – who was arrested last month -- a diary with detailed entries
about Chowdhury’s connection with traffickers.

According to the diary, Chowdhury accompanied prime accused and
Jalpaiguri-based child adoption centre Bimala Sishu Griho chairperson
Chandana Chakraborty to Delhi on February 2 and met BJP general
secretary Vijayvargiya.

Chakraborty is now in custody along with her aide Sonali Mondal for
selling at least 17 children through shady adoption deals.

Vijayvargiya cast aspersions on the police action and advocated a
central agency probe.

“I have no trust in the police investigation. In pursuance of a
conspiracy, one after the other leaders of our party are being falsely
implicated and arrested. We do not trust this (Bengal) government nor
their police.

“This government and their police can go to any extent. So, we would
like to see the matter being probed by a central agency,” he said.

Actor-turned-BJP MP Roopa Ganguly said those who are levelling such
“detestable charges” against her “and a young girl like Juhi
Chowdhury” would have to pay for it.
