Romeo replayed: Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers would have an even
tougher time in today’s UP 😜

Juliet (standing in balcony): O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

Romeo (standing below balcony): Shh! Someone’ll hear my name.

Juliet: Your name? What’s wrong with Romeo? It’s a perfectly good name.

Romeo: Not in UP it isn’t. Young guys who hang around street corners
looking at girls have been given a bad name – my name, and special
anti-Romeo police teams have been formed to nab them.

Juliet: You mean the cops are nabbing anyone and everyone whom they
think looks like they could be a Romeo?

Romeo: Yup, particularly if the person they think looks like a Romeo
also happens to look like a Muslim, or a Yadav.

Juliet: But you’re not a Muslim or a Yadav. You’re a Montague.

Romeo: I don’t think that’s a recognised caste here, not even a
scheduled one. Anyway, my name is Romeo, and that’s enough for these
guys to haul me off to jail.

Juliet: So what are you going to do?

Romeo: I’m going to change my name by deed poll.

Juliet: Oh, no! A Romeo by any other name wouldn’t be as sweet. Don’t
be so chicken!

Romeo: With no meat of any other kind available – what with abattoirs
banned, along with Romeo – no one’s got any option but to go chicken.
What do you think of Ramu Montague?

Juliet: How awful that our love should have to hide under the cover of an alias.

Romeo: Shh! That’s another word that has had an alias imposed upon it.
Love has become a double-barrelled name and is often referred to as
love-jihad.

Juliet: You mean that instead of being known as the world’s most
famous star-crossed lovers we’ll now be known as the world’s most
famous love-jihadists?

Romeo: I’m afraid so. We’ll have to do a ghar wapsi: you go wapsi to
your ghar, and I go wapsi to my ghar, never to meet again.

Juliet: Oh dear. I’ll wear black in mourning.

Romeo: No you won’t. Saffron is the new black here. In fact, it’s the
new everything.
