The all-too-menacing onward march of the xenopobic and Islamophobic far right, at least in Old Europe, has apparently been halted, at least for the time being.
The French election was no doubt a hugely important event. The defeat of Le Pen also signifies a tight slap in the face of Putin, whose (undeclared) endorsement of the far right candidates was hardly in doubt, Trump, who had openly backed Marine Le Pen, and the Putinistas, favouring Le Pen over Macron. But, pretty much worrying is the fact that Marine Le Pen has considerably expanded her support base - as compared to her party's past, as did Geert Wilders in Netherlands. So, it's only a reprieve.
