[In the meanwhile, "(t)op lawyers with at least four major law firms
rebuffed White House overtures to represent President Trump in the
Russia investigations, in part over concerns that the president would
be unwilling to listen to their advice, according to five sources
familiar with discussions about the matter."

So, the "scam" is just not going to go away, at least for a while.]

Tempestuous Thursday looms ahead for Donald Trump as Comey testifies

WASHINGTON: A tumultuous Thursday looms ahead for President Trump as
America holds its breath for what it expected to be among the most
watched congressional testimony in history by sacked FBI Director
James Comey.

The blockbuster event was prefaced by stunning revelations on Tuesday
that Comey asked U.S Attorney General Jeff Sessions not to leave him
alone with the President fearing pressure from Trump to ditch the
Russia probe, and Sessions himself had threatened to quit after being
berated by the Trump for allowing various legal issues to get out of
hand.

TV and cable networks have cleared their schedules to provide
wall-to-wall live coverage of the hearing by the Senate Intelligence
Committee, which is set to begin at 10 a.m (7.30 p.m IST) with some
channels even running down a countdown clock. Not since the Watergate
hearings - with the possible exception of Anita Hill testifying about
sexual harassment by a Supreme Court Justice - has Congressional
testimony attracted so much public attention and media frenzy.

Some DC restaurants and bars are featuring Comey Hearing Watch Parties
and Happy Hours opening at 10 a.m.

The White House suggested the President may be too busy to watch the
proceedings because of a packed schedule, but his program showed him
free during the opening hour and jokes abounded about whether he would
tweet about it.

Indicative of the issue playing in his mind, Trump announced on
Twitter on Wednesday morning that he is nominating Christopher Wray,
who once oversaw the Enron probe, as the new FBI Director, describing
him as a ''man of impeccable credentials.'' Asked about the hearing by
reporters just before a meeting with GOP Congressional leaders, Trump
tersely responded, ''I wish him luck.''

But it is the President who will likely need luck considering Comey's
potential to damage him even more than he already has. Senate
Democrats on the committee are expected to seek further clarity on
Comey's memos in which he is said to have recorded Trump's efforts to
pressure him into ditching the Russia probe.

In fact, Comey feared the President's interference so much that he is
said to have told Attorney General Jeff Sessions that he did not want
to be left alone with Trump, believing that the AG should protect the
FBI from White House interference. In at least one instance Trump is
reported to have asked Sessions (and vice-president Mike Pence) to
leave the room before turning the heat on Comey, seeking a pledge of
loyalty and asking him to drop the probe into former National Security
Advisor Mike Flynn, whose ties to the Russian establishment were the
focus of attention.

It now turns out that Sessions himself offered to quit the new
administration after Trump lit into him for letting things go out of
hand, including recusing himself from the Russia probe.

All this will be overshadowed if Comey testimony implicates Trump,
although it is no means certain he will spill everything in a public
hearing.

Ahead of the testimony, Comey met with Robert Mueller, his predecessor
at the FBI who was named special counsel and tasked with heading the
probe into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russia. Mueller
reportedly wanted to review Comey's testimony to make sure none of it
compromised the probe.
