<<The Adivasis, Dalits, OBCs and other indigenous people have filed cases in different places. It is more important since it is the community that has come forward to take this bold step to file their protest and resistance against the maligning and vilifying their faith under the ambit of celebration of a Hindu festival.>>
A few short points. I. While, here, at the very tail end, the author claims that "cases in different places" have been filed, the article itself cires only a single case: "Lokesh Sori the Kanker district Vice-President of SC/ST Morcha is the applicant and a case has been registered under sections 153(a), 295(a) and 298 of IPC. District Collector M.L. Kotwani has confirmed the registration of FIR against members of organising committee of Durga pooja festival celebration in Pakhanjor." The whole istory s, in fact, woven around this *single* complaint. II. Far more important, let alone the "Adivasis, Dalits, OBCs" constituting a single unified body, even the Adivasis of India are widely varied. Even in one region, there are numerous Adivasi communities with their very own mythologies and cultures, dialects/languages. In central India, we find Murias and other Gondis, for example. In eastern India: Santhals, Mundas and Oraons - three major Adivasi communities. Religionwise, Adivasis are broadly divided into three categories: Hindu, Christian and various local varieties. This is as per the census data, where one's religion is indicated based on self-declaration. III. The right to freedom of religion accords one to practise one's own religion. Acordingly, one should be free to worship Mahabali, Ravana or Mahishasura. And, also, Ram or Durga, if one so chooses. Also: Allah or Jesus or whoever. The attempt to trigger frictions is a double-edged sword and could turn quite harrmful. IV. The glorification of irrational myths and mythological figures, of whatever variety, contain certain inherent dangers. Fighting myths with counter-myths, of whatever provenance, may not always be a very wise way to about it. Sukla On Saturday, 30 September 2017 21:23:34 UTC+5:30, K.P.
