[Irony of ironies!

The attempt to delink Ram Mandir from election, by deferring the hearing
after the coming Lok Sabha poll, is being dubbed as "linking Ram Mandir
with elections", and it is being done as a part of an ongoing poll campaign
in Gujarat!
How meaning of words is made to stand right on its head!

Not only that, all at the same time, elsewhere, with the same poll campaign
as the backdrop, the BJP attacks Rahul as "Babar Bhakt"!

So very rediculous, and so very routine as well!

In terms of shrillness, it has almost gone back to the 1992 days.

And, by training all their blazing guns on the Congress, and Rahul in
particular, the Hindutva forces are are only shoring up their severely
sagging reputation as the principal pole in mobilisation and fight against
communalism!]

Gujarat Assembly Election 2017: PM Narendra Modi attacked Congress over
Kapil Sibal's Ayodhya remark

DHANDHUKA, GUJARAT: Four days before Gujarat votes and exactly 25 years
after the Babri masjid was razed in Ayodhya, the Ram temple issue has
stormed back into a centre of a row, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi
making a sharp attack today on the Congress over its leader Kapil Sibal's
plea in the Supreme Court to defer hearing in the Ayodhya case till after
the 2019 parliamentary elections. The PM said that that while he has "no
problems with Kapil Sibal representing Muslims, why does he have to link
Ram Mandir with the Lok Sabha elections. Is this thinking proper?"

Here is your 10-point cheatsheet to the story:

1. PM Modi was addressing an election rally in Gujarat's Dhandhuka, when he
hit out at the Congress over Mr Sibal's remarks. "Now the Congress links
the Ram Mandir with elections. They are least bothered about the nation,"
he said.

2. At another rally, PM Modi congratulated the Sunni Waqf Board for "their
brave stand on the matter and disassociating themselves from the statement
of Kapil Sibal".

3. Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal yesterday asked the Supreme Court to postpone
hearing in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute till after the 2019 Lok
Sabha elections, arguing that the BJP has said "the Ram temple will be
built before 2019 through legal means... They want to make it part of their
election manifesto and the court should not fall into the trap."

4. The Supreme Court rejected his appeal and said it would begin final
hearings from February 8 on the disputed site claimed by both Hindus and
Muslims. It is hearing petitions against a 2010 Allahabad High Court
verdict which divided the disputed site in three parts -- one each for
Hindu group Nirmohi Akhara, the Ram Lalla or infant Lord Ram represented by
the Hindu Mahasabha, and the Sunni Waqf Board which handles properties
owned by Sunni Muslims.

5. The Sunni Waqf Board, one of the groups who Mr Sibal was seen to be
representing in court, disowned his comments. "Yes, Kapil Sibal is our
lawyer but he is also related to a political party, his statement in the
Supreme Court yesterday was wrong. We want a solution to the issue at the
earliest," said Haji Mehboob of the board.

6. But Mr Sibal later hit back at the PM Modi, insisting that the board
wasn't his client. "Our PM comments without knowing things sometimes. Amit
Shah and he said I represented the Sunni Waqf Board. I was never a Sunni
Waqf Board lawyer," he said.

7. The Congress has already distanced itself from Mr Sibal's comments.
"Kapil Sibal has clearly stated that he appeared as an individual and not
on behalf of Congress... the ideology and faith of Congress is in sync with
the judicial process and judiciary of our country," said the party's
Jyotiraditya Scindia today.

8. On Tuesday, BJP chief Amit Shah said Congress boss Rahul Gandhi must
clarify his party's stand on the Ram temple. The BJP, Mr Shah said, is
clear it wants the dispute resolved at the soonest. "The Supreme Court
should give a judgment and a grand Ram temple should be built in Ayodhya,"
he said.

9. The BJP, whose political growth was powered by its Ram temple campaign
in the 1990s, has in recent years relegated the issue to the back pages of
its election manifestos. But the appointment of saffron-robed priest Yogi
Adityanath as UP chief minister earlier this year was seen to indicate that
the party could again bring back the Ram temple issue to the forefront of
its agenda as it preps for the 2019 national election.

10. Yogi Adityanath has asserted that building a Ram temple is a key
agenda, including in his campaign for the BJP in Gujarat, which votes for a
new government on December 9 and 14. Votes will be counted on December 18.
The BJP has ruled the state for the last 22 years.

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader GVL Narasimha Rao on
Wednesday accused Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi of colluding with
Babri Masjid Action Committee convenor Zafaryab Jilani and AIMIM chief
Asaduddin Owaisi to oppose construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Taking a dig at the Gandhi scion, the BJP national spokesperson said Rahul
Gandhi is certainly a "Babar Bhakt" & a "Kin of Khilji".

“Rahul Gandhi has teamed up with Owaisis, Jilanis to oppose Ram temple in
Ayodhya. Rahul Gandhi is certainly a "Babar Bhakt" & a "Kin of Khilji".
Babar destroyed Ram temple & Khilji plundered Somnath. Nehru dynasty sided
with both Islamic invaders. Travesty & Perversity of dynasty!” Rao tweeted.

The BJP leader's controversial remark comes a day after Congress leader and
senior advocate Kapil Sibal, while arguing for the Sunni Waqf Board in the
Babri Masjid case, told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that since the court's
decision in the case would have "very serious ramifications", hearing be
deferred till July 2019 by which time the general election would be over.

"Please fix the matter in July 2019 and we assure that we will not seek any
adjournments... Justice should not only be done, it should seem to be
done," Sibal had told the court.

The Supreme Court, however, refused to defer the case until after the 2019
Lok Sabha polls. The court deferred the case hearing till February 8, 2018.

The apex court bench also "prima facie" declined the forceful plea by a
battery of senior lawyers including Kapil Sibal and Rajeev Dhavan that the
appeals be either referred to a five or seven judge bench, keeping in mind
the sensitive nature of the case and its ramifications on the country's
secular fabric and polity.

The apex court said it would commence hearing on February 8, 2018, on a
batch of petitions which challenged a 2010 Allahabad High Court verdict on
the Ayodhya title suit that divided the disputed Babri Masjid site between
the Nirmohi Akhara, Lord Ram deity, and the Sunni Waqf Board.

The Allahabad High Court had in 2010 ordered a three-way division of the
disputed land which has been challenged in the Supreme Court.

The mosque dates back to 1528. It was built in Ayodhya by Mir Baqi – a
commander of Mughal emperor Babur – from where it gets the name Babri
Masjid. However, a report by the Archaeological Survey of India suggested
the existence of a 10th-century temple at the site.
