Now, please try to make some sense on my mind about some issues that come
across today. Minister MJ Akbar has been accused with several cases of
sexual abuse. He replies that all charges are part of `electoral politics'.
It may be difficult for
many people to take a stand on this issue claiming `I did not witness the
sexual abuse'. I have no problem with such logic also. But the rationality
of the accused defeats his own intelligence. Among the many charges of
sexual abuse cases, on one abuse charge, he state: `At the time concerned,
I had a very tiny cubicle, patched together by plywood and glass. Others,
had tables and chairs two feet away. It is utterly bizarre to believe that
anything could have happened in that tiny space and moreover, that no one
in the vicinity would come to know.' Akbar's explanations are two: 1. The
space was tiny and so no molestation could have taken place. His complaint
is that many others had large space but he had only a tiny space. Does
anybody know how much `space' is required for any sexual abuse? 2. Now, the
second justification: `Others were working nearby'. Dear MJ Akbar, you just
said that your tiny space was a `private space'. And you were the boss.
Given your space of power, perhaps others might have found it convenient
to keep quiet. A senior journalist like MJ Akbar should have furnished
better logic than such flimsy excuses he narrated. Allah hu Akbar! Now,
this may appear to be a `private' and small affair to surprise us. But I
can tell you a `public' affair also. Thousands of women guided by the Hindu
fundamentalists are on streets on the Sabarimala issue, claiming that ` We
do not want our rights'. Now, this is an absurd drama. Women coming forward
on streets and saying that they do not want their rights. And now the
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has also toned down saying that `we
should not hurt the sentiments of the believers'. Which believer are we
talking about? Are we talking about a believer in Indian Constitution, law,
justice and equality for women? Or are we talking about a believer in
Hindutva agenda? In addition, contributing to this absurd drama, Shiv Sena
has already stated that they would initiate mass suicides to protect the
`non rights' of women. Well, I am not very sure whether such mass suicides
would reduce the numbers of Shiv Sena or increase their numbers. Anyway,
Vive la Women's Movement in India. Ultimately, the numbers on the ground
also count!
