[What happened to "fixed tenure" of two years!?
Never ever had happened like this.

Of course, naval chief, Vishnu Bhagawat, in another first, had summarily
been dismissed by Fernandes/Vajpayee.

So, now, some courtroom tamasha!

The tweet from Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari, on the subject,
deserves atttention:
<<In terms of both Lok Pal Act & Supreme Court Judgment in Jain Hawala
case-Director CBI has a fixed tenure of 2 years.Govt can not curtail
tenure/take interim measures without a meeting of Committee consisting of
PM,CJI & leader of Opposition/single largest party.Prima Facie ?able>>

Quite significantly, not only the CBI Director has been divested of charge,
despite the provision for "fixed tenure", three officers next in seniority
stand superseded.
An amplified rerun of what had happened with the Indian Army.

<<The order implies that the government has sidelined all the three
additional directors number three in the agency's hierarchy, including A K
Sharma, whose name had figured in the complaint by Asthana.

Both CBI director Alok Verma and special director Rakesh Asthana have been
"divested of all powers", sources said, calling it the first such case in
the history of the agency.>>

Not only that:
<<A total of 9 officer have been transferred. Deputy SP of CBI AK Bassi has

Verma himself had been appointed as the CBI Director by this very regime,
pitchforked from outside of the CBI ranks, flouting the set norms.

The regime is, obviously, out to subvert all the vital institutions.
Now, it's for the judiciary to safeguard its credibility.
Let's see.]

After the government in a dramatic move sent the CBI’s “No 1 and No 2 on
leave” Alok Verma approached the Supreme Court challenging his removal as
the agency’s director. The case is likely to come up for hearing on Friday.
M Nageshwar Rao, a 1986 batch Odisha cadre officer and Joint Director at
CBI has been directed to take over as the chief, according to an order by
the prime minister-led Appointments Committee.

Early morning reports suggested that raids were conducted at the CBI
Headquarters in New Delhi and the office was sealed and outsiders were not
allowed inside. The 10th and 11th floor of the CBI building are being
searched. The offices of both Verma and Asthana have also been sealed.
However, the building has now been opened, PTI reported.

The unprecedented move comes at a time when Verma was at loggerheads with
the CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana, booked by the agency in an alleged
bribery case. Meanwhile, in another development, CBI Dy SP Ajay Kumar
Bassi, who was leading the investigating against Asthana has been
transferred to Andaman and Nicobar Islands with immediate effect.

Rakesh Asthana was also stripped of all his responsibilities at the agency
yesterday. Asthana, a 1984 batch Indian Police Service officer of Gujarat
cadre, is alleged to have demanded a bribe of Rs 5 crore from a
Hyderabad-based businessman through two middlemen to help him get off the
hook in the Moin Qureshi case.

Verma also alleged corruption on Asthana’s part with regard to the Sterling
Biotech case. Asthana hit back by writing to the Cabinet Secretary saying
that Verma was interfering in his probes and had tried to stall a raid on
Lalu Prasad in the IRCTC case. He also alleged corruption on Verma’s part.

In midnight move, govt divests Alok Verma of charge as CBI Director
Asthana Tuesday approached the Delhi High Court for quashing of an FIR
lodged against him by Verma. The court inturn directed the CBI to maintain
“status quo” until Monday on proceedings. The agency had also arrested its
own Deputy Superintendent of Police Devendra Kumar for “faslification of
records” in connection with the bribery allegations against Asthana.
