Friends, Listed below are only six of the most recent deeply disturbing developments. These are parts of a much larger and a consistent pattern. These are, no way, stray, somewhat customary pre-election aberrations. Points 1, 2 and 3 below are, in fact, "promises" made in the BJP Manifesto itself.
These are just markers of a project to dismantle the edifice of the "secular", "democratic" Indian state structure that emrged out of the successful culmination of the epic freedom struggle struggle and embodying the values which it came to espouse, largely undiminished even by the terrible trauma of the Partition that accompanied the deeply pined for national Independence. In fact, the nation itself came to be imagined and was wrought out in the process of that epic struggle in which millions and millions took part and made sacrifices. Today, the legatees of the dark forces that had scrupulously kept away from that huge struggle and even slandered it are in power. They're using that vantage position to dismantle the "secular", "democratic" structure, initially, rather cautiously and gradually accelerating the rate, in order to achieve their goal of displscing it with an utterly authoritarian and monstrously repressive "Hindu Rashtra" - an embodiment of trashing of all modern, forward-looking, harmonious humanist values. An embodiment of visceral hate and anger. The ongoing poll may be our last chance to apply an effective brake to halt the disastrous race towards the bottom. With the democratic institutions of the state already severely undermined at the end of the five-year term, it'd perhaps be too optimistic for us to expect the Election Commission to do its job. Never mind. We must do ours. That cannot but have its impact in myriad ways. Help the fellow Indians come out of the stupor, come out of the evil spell. So, let's do ours.
