You say you want to quit. But quitting under duress is not a sign of leadership. If you quit, you will surely bring in a Sitaram Kesri-like figure as president of the party. No one in the party is going to listen to him. As he becomes ensconced in his chair, he will start resenting the treatment that would be meted out to him. And so if you are thinking that after a few years you will come back as party president, you might be in for a shock. Just as Sitaram Kesri was hard to displace from his chair, so too the new Sitaram Kesri might prove to be. You have to be ruthless about the reasons for your defeat. She had her time and day from 1998 to 2004, after which she let UPA1 function relatively autonomously, but then she took over UPA2 by having her men installed in key positions in the PMO and by completely marginalising the PM. Lord William Bentick was governor-general of India from 1828 to 1835. In 1829 he banned sati. Today there are hardly any instances of sati in our vast land. Nehru passed the Hindu code bills after intense opposition from orthodox Hindus, who felt, perhaps rightly, that their community was the sole religious community that was being reformed. The bills allowed for divorce for the first time in Hindu history and banned polygamy from Hinduism. Has polygamy been banned from Islam in India. Senior Owaisi is an educated man. He feels that triple talaq is an unjust practice, but no one from outside the community should try to ban it. The community will reform itself from within. When did any community reform its bad practices from within? This much credit you must give Hinduism, Rahul. It has always allowed for being reformed. The caste system is still a stain on it. The upper-caste Hindu still hesitates to marry a Dalit, but he is fine with being ruled by one. He would have loved to have a Muslim like Abdul Kalam as the prime minister of the country.
