Dear friends, There are two kinds of people who get connected to social action and thought processes. 1. Those who indulge in it as a past time activity, and 2. Those who commit themselves, their minds and bodies and try to find a meaning for themselves in relation with the rest of humanity, whichever action they chose to do. Binu Mathew, the editor of Countercurrents.org falls into the second category of friends of mine. Many friends wondered whether the choice made by Binu to indulge and commit himself to develop Countercurrents.org leaving a safe, secure place in mainstream journalism, was a `stupid’ move. For, this effort had no economic security. And Binu did not the run this effort through commercial advertisements or institutional funding. The dream was for the creation of a participatory space, a platform for expression of ideas and information concerning diverse social issues and debates ruling our future as human civilization.
Over the years, Countercurrents.org has done substantial work within the above framework. And here is this effort of genuine communication today with readers and writers in every country, with a total readership to be counted in lakhs. The performance and its impact were beyond my expectations, thanks to dedicated work of Bnu. But when it comes to the hard realities of economic sustenance, the effort is still at cross roads. Why should this happen after all? Why should Binu Mathew while struggling day and night to make the voices for justice heard, struggle even today with appeals for subscriptions? Is it the job of Binu Mathew alone, or a task of all friends who believe that Countercurrents.org should sustain? Is Binu Mathew a `stupid martyr’ in shouldering such heavy responsibilities or are we that `smart’ to say that `you perform this significant job for us so that we can reap the benefits?' Are there changes required in our mental perceptions of sustaining socially meaningful efforts? If so, the time has come to extend a hand. It is like saying that a revolution is urgently required so that we can `consume’ its benefits free of cost and without our involvement. At this stage of Countercurrents.org it is clear that the effort needs wider support to sustain it. And I believe that if every person who is convinced of the significance of Countercurrents.org can mobilize a minimum number of 5 annual subscriptions, it will run without much tension for one more year. Therefore, hear these words as an appeal and appeal to your friends to do whatever they can to sustain Countercurrents.org – For us, For Now and Forever ! Extension of every hand in support is required. Even the smallest contribution you can make will be appreciated. Without such expressions of solidarity and compassion, no socially meaningful effort can sustain. Those who feel the need to sustain Countercurrents.org may please visit: https://countercurrents.org/subscription and do your bit to mobilise 5 subscribers from your friends.
