"দেবতারে প্রিয় করি, প্রিয়েরে দেবতা।"
(We turn god into our beloved and the beloved into god.)
That's a line from Tagore.

So, creative literature coming from the Hindu ecology has often
superimposed humanness on one's god. S/he has often been addressed as Tu
(inferior/intimate form of "You") - usually, in an endearing way. That's
very much integral to the tradition.
(Even otherwise, in the Hindu pantheon, gods and goddesses are pretty often
humanlike. Nothing too unusual.)
It's also not too unusual for the devotee to have a very "personal"
relationship with the divinity.

For the Shaktas - the Hindus for whom Shakti (i.e. Kali, Durga et al), is
the primary divinity, Kali is a meat loving goddess. In the famous Kali
Temple in Kalighat (in Kolkata) ritual sacrifice of goats - overseen by
Brahmin priests, to propitiate the goddess is a routine affair.

The Hindutva gang is, however, out to homogenise highly diverse Hindu
traditions - a la Abrahamic religions (which it professes to despise), and
conceptualise divine figures as distant and, even, angry.
That's how Ram Lalla (the cute and loveable) gets completely overrun by a
macho warrior Lord Ram and bhakt (the devoted) Hanuman starts getting
displaced by an altogether new artefact - angry Hanuman, having no
scriptural sanction.
Quite interestingly, that doesn't raise an eyebrow.

*Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan!!!*
*That's precisely what's in operation here.*
*Not to mistake, the current assault on Mahua Moitra is, in effect, an
assault on the (Hindu) Bengali identity too. And also on "Hinduism" as
practised by so many communities beyond the cow belt and, thereby, all the
non-dominant identities - the essential constituent elements of "India".*

The subject controversy has got to be understood in those terms.
