[As it appears, two parallel and competing narratives are emerging.
I. It's a crime of passion. Committed by a lowlife having ruling party
connections.
This appears to be the latest official position.
II. It's a crime of retribution. A case of brutal gangrape -- meant as a
punishment for the victim's crusade against the corruptions by the
Principal and his coterie. Committed by some interns.
This is the version that the Chief Minister's opponents are now pushing.
(The claims of broken collar and pelvic bones are not easy to digest. But,
that doesn't ipso facto completely negate the very essence of this
particular narrative.)

The swift re-posting of the disgraced Principal as the head of another
medical college in Calcutta itself is simply outrageous.
(Good that the students of the National Medical College resented and
resisted.)
This has been followed up with a massive vandalising attack on the subject
medical college, presumably to strike terror and destroy evidence before
the CBI arrives.
These two taken together are strongly suggestive of behind-the-scene hidden
hands of the deposed Principal and his top-notch political backers.

At the very base is, of course, the most fundamental issue of women's right
to be "free" and "safe" too.
And also the issue of the safety of health workers at their workplace.
These are the, though interconnected, two separate issues on the table.

Like the earlier "Nirbhaya" case -- in Delhi, protests have gone national.
(In the earlier case, it was the national capital. This time, it's a state
capital -- also the first capital of British India, with global name
recognition. The victim appears to be a Dalit.)
Incidentally, too many rapes keep taking place, with almost predictable
regularity. There's hardly ever more than a ripple.
This one has turned out to be an exceptional exception.]

Remarkably informed and fairly nuanced too. Despite the explicitly dramatic
style -- obviously meant to attract eyeballs.
Has dealt with multiple facets in terms of known facts. Grey areas have
been identified as such.

One may or may not fully agree with him. But, that doesn't really matter
much.
