A branch on the main repository makes sense to collaborate on this.

I think the bitfield solution is not a bad one.  If I can figure out how
to open bitfield enum to all (or more) compilers (or even just both GCC
and Clang) that support it, that would be good enough.

The more portable the better, even if we are choosing to support only
GCC and Clang.
