I know that this probably isn't the precise mailing list for this
question, but it's worth a shot. I've been trying to upgrade luatex on
my Mac (10.5) running TeX-Live 2008. The Tex Live Utility will only
update luatex to 0.25. So I built a binary of luatex from the source
and replaced my old one with it.
Now luatex --version reports I'm running Version
beta-0.40.1-2009052510. But when I try to typeset I get the following
message:
---! /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/web2c/luatex/pdflualatex.fmt
was written by an older version
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)
A search on the internet reveals that I should run fmtutil --all. I do
this but get the following error:
This is a summary of all `failed' messages and warnings:
`pdftex -ini -jobname=cont-en -progname=context -8bit *cont-en.ini'
failed
`xetex -ini -jobname=cont-en -progname=context -8bit *cont-en.ini'
failed
`luatex -ini -jobname=lualatex -progname=lualatex lualatex.ini' failed
`luatex -ini -jobname=pdflualatex -progname=pdflualatex
pdflualatex.ini' failed
`luatex -ini -jobname=luatex -progname=luatex luatex.ini' failed
`luatex -ini -jobname=pdfluatex -progname=pdfluatex pdfluatex.ini'
failed
I'm really stuck at this point? Can anyone help me with upgrading
LuaTex? Have I the correct procedure? Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance!

The workaround didn't work. Including {gregoriotex} last produces
the following error:
/usr/local/texlive/2008/../texmf-local/tex/luatex/luatextra/
luaextra.lua)
! You can't use `\luatexversion' as tex library index.
l.82 ...t{dofile(kpse.find_file("luatextra.lua"))}
And what is the result without gregorio? Maybe it's a bug of
luaextra with old luatex (luatex 0.25 is rather outdated and buggy)...
Thank you,
