I have just transferred the files I was working on to another computer with a similar set up and it works there.
It seems the problem lies with a failing Eeepc rather than software. Other software has been failing mysteriously - it seems to be allergic to the gnome libraries for instance. I apologies for any confusion, and await the arrival of my new laptop with eagerness.
