I understand John prefers to have the partition equally distributed on
the several staves, but this has also a disadvantage: for achieving this
goal, you will have to stretch partitions horizontally on each line,
which is sometimes very ugly. You can also decide not to stretch
horizontally, but then other people will ask to distribute the neumes
better from left to right on each line, and this will result in a never
ending story.

Now, from the point of view of coding (developers: correct me if I say
an insanity), computing the space formula depending on the number of
staves allocated would imply a several passes process, with iterations,
since the number of staves allocated is only known when the whole
partition has been processed. In my opinion, this would imply a complete
redesign of gregorio, which doesn't seem to be realistic.

I would suggest to John to cut manually the partition (with the gabc 'z'
or 'Z' instruction) when he needs this feature.

I came to gregorio because I was disappointed by the way other softwares
were introducing ugly spaces into the partitions and stretching these
out not very esthetically.

Best regards.
