Dear Jeff, I think that Richard's response addresses your specific problem, but on a related note, are you familiar with the two alternative spacing schemes proposed by me and by Benedetto Vichi? They considerably improve the spacing between words, especially (in my experience) for English. You can compare the results on http://illuminarepublications.com/gregorio/ . I've attached my scheme (gsp-smith.tex) to this message. You can call it in a TeX file with the code \GreLoadSpaceConf{smith} when the gsp-smith.tex file is in the same directory.
